Today is the day that i ask my boss why is it that we should ask questions like why is it that we should ask “are you pregnant?” and “how many kids you have?” in an interview. As to me, these questions are additional barriers of discrimination to a woman especially. And guess what my cold blooded supervisor say, “Well, this is reality, we must put one. Every company is doing it. Sorry.” Mind you. His sorry is not apologetic sorry ok. Its sorry this is reality there is nothing that i can argue about that kind of tone.
I felt v angry. Like does that means that every company is doing it then it justify why we are doing it. Doesnt Mom Tripartite say that we should not practise discrimation. So what if he is a man? A man can practise discrimination to a woman who is pregnant la? Emotions totally flooded me coz my impression of him is that he is insensitive and cold-blooded.
Then i went to ask my HR the same question. I think as a woman she answers better. She did quote reality as well. But she illustrate it with an example such as hiring a woman for a project. If the woman is away for maternity leave at a crucial period of time then maybe they wont hire her now but may consider her later. Its by a case by case basis, she said. She also explains that the reason why we wanna ask how many kids they have is becoz it affects the person’s no of childcare leave to take.. At least this sounds less discriminating to me. Well at least it goes out to show that textbook theories on ethics can only go so far.
Still.. that boss is damn reality driven. Yes and the reality to him is that he has no gf for the past 26 years. You wonder why.
still feels damn angry towards this ego's man's attitude towards women. u just pray yr wife dun fall into such discrimination.
